Etronix Tamiya Male and Female Connector with Crimps
There are two sizes of Tamiya connectors: mini and standard. The mini-Tamiya connector: uses one square and one or two round sheaths. outside dimensions is 9.9mm x 5.4mm x 22mm (about 3/8" x 7/32" x 7/8")
Many smaller sized cars also use Tamiya Mini -connector. Tamiya connector cannot be connected wrong way and it has a plastic clip to keep it connected. While bit (or very) outdated, the Tamiya connector is still valid today and is very suitable for low current applications.
Tamiya RC plugs are a type of connector commonly used in radio-controlled (RC) cars, particularly for connecting NiMH batteries to the Electronic Speed Controller (ESC). They feature a locking mechanism for secure connections and are designed for relatively low-current applications. While suitable for stock 540 motors and 7.2V NiMH batteries, they can become a bottleneck with higher-powered setups like brushless motors and LiPo batteries.
Here's a more detailed breakdown:
Key Features:
NiMH Battery Compatibility:
Tamiya connectors are frequently used with NiMH batteries commonly found in many RC cars.
Secure Connection:
The connector has a locking mechanism that prevents accidental disconnection, which is especially useful in RC cars where vibrations and movement are common.
Low Resistance (for intended use):
While not as low as some other connectors like Deans, Tamiya connectors offer efficient power transfer for the applications they are designed for.
Durable Design:
They often feature gold-plated connectors for reliable and low-resistance power transfer and flexible, heat-resistant silicone wire.
Safety Features:
The connectors isolate the positive and negative wires and have a locking mechanism, making them safer to use in damp conditions and for low-current applications.
Limitations:
Not ideal for high-power setups:
Tamiya connectors are not recommended for high-current applications like brushless motors and LiPo batteries.
Can overheat:
In high-power setups, Tamiya connectors can overheat and potentially melt the plastic housing.
Limited Current Capacity:
They are typically designed for low to medium current draw (around 15A constant or 20A burst).
Alternatives:
Deans/T-Plugs: Offer lower resistance and higher current capacity than Tamiya connectors.
XT60: A popular choice for higher-power applications, known for their ease of soldering and secure connection.
Bullet Connectors: Used with various sizes depending on the application, can handle high currents and voltages.
EC-Connectors: Similar to XT connectors but with separate pins for easier soldering.
In summary: Tamiya connectors are a common and reliable choice for connecting batteries to ESCs in RC cars using stock motors and NiMH batteries. However, if you are upgrading to more powerful components, it's essential to consider alternative connector types that can handle the higher current draw.
