What the Pinion Gear Does

The pinion gear is fitted to the motor shaft and meshes with the spur gear inside the gearbox. Its tooth count directly affects the gear ratio, which changes how torque, speed, and efficiency are delivered to the drivetrain.

On the FTX Kanyon and FTX Mighty Thunder, pinion choice has a noticeable effect due to the fitted 2-speed transmission.

Stock and Optional Pinion Gears

Stock Pinion

• FTX8468 – 20 Tooth (20T)

• Supplied as standard

• Provides the highest top speed, especially noticeable in second gear

Optional Pinion Gears

• FTX6335 – 17 Tooth (17T)

  • Increased torque compared to stock

  • Slight reduction in top speed

  • Good balance for trail driving and mixed terrain

• FTX8432 – 15 Tooth (15T)

  • Maximum torque output

  • Best low-speed control

  • Lowest overall top speed

Performance Effects of Reducing Pinion Size

Reducing the number of teeth on the pinion gear (for example from 20T to 17T or 15T) results in:

• Increased torque at the wheels

• Improved crawling and hill-climbing ability

• Better low-speed throttle control

• Reduced load and stress on the motor and drivetrain

• Reduced overall top speed

• Longer run times, as the motor operates more efficiently and draws less current under load

The FTX8432 15T pinion is therefore ideal for crawling, technical terrain, and scale trail use where control, torque, and endurance are more important than outright speed.

Fitting Notes

• Always reset and check gear mesh when changing pinion gears
