FTX MIGHTY THUNDER/KANYON LONG CVD (1PC)

What Are These Parts?

What CVD Drive Shafts Are

CVD (Constant Velocity Drive) shafts are drivetrain components that transfer power from the differential to the wheels while allowing steering and suspension movement. Unlike simple dogbone shafts, CVDs maintain a more consistent rotational speed when operating at an angle.

On the FTX Kanyon and Mighty Thunder, theinternal front axle CVD drive shaftssit inside the front axle housing and connect the front differential output to the outer axle shafts that run through the steering knuckles.

Specific Parts

FTX8400 - Long Internal Front CVD Drive Shaft

  • Long-length internal CVD shaft

  • Fits one side of thefront axle(the side with the longer distance between the differential and hub)

  • Supplied as a single shaft

FTX8401 - Short Internal Front CVD Drive Shaft

  • Short-length internal CVD shaft

  • Fits the opposite side of thefront axle

  • Supplied as a single shaft

One long shaft and one short shaft are required to complete the front axle.

Compatible Front Axle and Steering Components

Front Axle Cases

  • FTX8308- Standard plastic front axle case

  • FTX8385- Upgraded front axle case

Both axle cases accept the FTX8400 and FTX8401 internal front CVD drive shafts.

Steering Knuckles

  • FTX6215- Standard plastic steering knuckles

  • FTX6367- Upgraded aluminium steering knuckles

Both the standard and upgraded steering knuckles are compatible with the internal front CVD shafts and front axle cases listed above.

How They Fit

General Fitment Process

  1. Remove the wheel
Remove the front wheel and wheel hex from the side you are working on.

  2. Disassemble the steering knuckle
Remove the steering knuckle and hub components to free the axle shaft.

  3. Access the front axle internals
Remove the screws securing the front axle case (FTX8308 or FTX8385) and separate the housing to expose the differential and internal CVD shafts.

  1. Remove the old CVD shaft
Slide the old internal front CVD shaft out of the differential output and axle tube.

  2. Install the new CVD shaft

    • Select the correct length (FTX8400 long or FTX8401 short)

    • Insert the inner end into the front differential output

    • Confirm smooth movement through the steering angle

  3. Reassemble the front axle
Refit the axle case, steering knuckle (FTX6215 or FTX6367), hub components, and wheel.

  4. Final check
Rotate the drivetrain by hand and turn steering lock to lock to ensure free movement.

Fitting Tips

  • Lightly grease the CVD joint and splines before installation

  • Do not overtighten axle case or steering knuckle screws

  • Check for binding when using upgraded aluminium steering knuckles

  • Regularly inspect front CVD shafts when running high steering angles or larger tyres

Summary

  • FTX8400andFTX8401are internal CVD drive shafts for thefront axle only

  • FTX8308is the standard front axle case

  • FTX8385is the upgraded front axle case

  • FTX6215are standard plastic steering knuckles

  • FTX6367are upgraded aluminium steering knuckles

  • All listed components are directly compatible on the front axle of the FTX Kanyon and Mighty Thunder
